A 7 Days Leisure Cycling Bike Tour on the East Coast of Sardinia.

The Sardinia Sunrise View Leisure Cycling Tour starts in the city of Olbia, in the North East of the Island, at the begin of the famous Costa Smeralda. Olbia is the economic engine of the geographic province of Gallura, rich in well-known tourist resorts, such as Porto Rotondo and Portisco, it is equipped with facilities that make it a very important tourist attraction for the whole island.

The tour follows the south direction, traveling along the coast, leaving the opportunity to discover the nature and history of this side of Sardinia.

From the beautiful beach La Cinta, with its white sand dunes and its lagoon, where numerous species of birds and the pink flamingos ply its waters, to the Naturalistic Oasis of Bidderosa. Then you’ll enter in the geographic area called Ogliastra, a massive limestone area, where are beautiful beaches, caves and deep valleys, with a low density of inhabitant the Ogliastra it’s the wildest part of Sardinia.

It isn’t only nature, it’s a travel along the story and the quite life of the villages, travelling with the point of view of a cyclist, enjoying the time to know the handicrafts and the genuine food.

This cycling tour is ideal for families and it’s the best occasion for those not very fit who could afford it on an e-bike.

Tour Description Day by Day.

Day 1.  Arrival.

On your arrival at the airport you will be met by the local guides team and transferred to your first accommodation, located in Olbia.

We will set some time aside to learn all about your holiday and fit the bikes.

Day 2.  Olbia to Budoni.

Distance: 48 km   •   Total Ascent: 750 mt 

Departure from the city of Olbia heading to south towards the town of Loiri. The beginning of the ride is flat and then we have a continuous, but gentle up and down until we reach the village of Padru (161 mt).

From Padru we take the direction to the coast and after 15 km we reach the Lagoon of San Teodoro, included in the list of special areas of conservation as a site of Community importance (SIC), as precious ecosystem that is home to a great wealth biological flora and fauna. Immediately after, we find the wonderful La Cinta beach that stretches for about 6 km to the north, overlooking a clear blue sea and surrounded by white sandy dunes. Continuing south we cross the tourist center of San Teodoro, with the possibility to stop for an ice cream or to do some shopping.

After the refreshing break we keep going to south in the direction of Ottiolu, where it is worthwhile to make a further stop to visit the town and the marina. Just a few easy kilometers separate us from our daily destination.

Day 3.  Budoni to Cala Liberotto (Bidderosa).

Distance: 44 km   •   Total Ascent: 300 mt

Today we start on a flat and partially costal road, always heading to south, until we cross the Posada river and reach the homonym village. Posada is one of the oldest urban centers of Sardinia, with a history of Sardinian-Etruscan and later Roman city. Facing a steep climb, we can visit the Castello della Fava (92 mt) built around the twelfth century, which offers a 360° view of the surrounding area. Leaving Posada we will ride along the Longo lagoon then get closer to the coast through the villages of San Giovanni and La Caletta and pedaling next the omonym beach. In the alternation of coastal and interior roads we get in the area of ​​Capo Comino where, with a detour of 2.5 km, you can reach the beach opposite the Island Ruja. Finally, we continue the ride in a semi-flat section for about 6 km to reach today’s destination: Cala Liberotto.

Day 4.  Bidderosa to Orosei

Distance: 27 km   •   Total Ascent: 330 mt

Today we riding a short stage, less 30 km, so we have the time to enjoy a beach. Starting from our accomodation we ride back for a few kilometers on the road we did yesterday to visit the Oasis of Bidderosa.

A gravel road in good conditions through the oasis, full of oaks, junipers and Mediterranean scrub, we will round the pond of Sa Curcurica, up to the coast and its beautiful bays. After a restoring stop we take back our route to get out from the oasis, and  reach the road SS 125 and than to the town of Orosei, today’s destination. We have the possibility to keep going until the mouth of the river Cedrino and Marina di Orosei.

Day 5.  Orosei to Dorgali.

Distance: 45 km   •   Total ascent: 900 mt

We leave the village of Orosei riding along the Cedrino river until we reach the small and quiet town of Onifai and then the village of Irgoli, famous center for the production of sausages, the typical “Carasau Bread” and its full-bodied red wines. Desiring to make a short stop, you can visit the St. Nicholas church and along the main streets you can see several murals. Continuing on our way we cross, before the village of Loculi, and then Galtellì.

After Galtellì we riding to coast direction until we reach the small port of Cala Cartoe, and then we’ll leave the coast to climb gradually but continuously, coming close to the Caves of Ispinigoli, which we strongly recommend a visit. Just a few kilometers uphill, and we reach the village of Dorgali, (380mt), an important center of Barbagia, famous for the handicrafts.

Day 6.  Dorgali to Santa Maria Navarrese.

Distance: 57 km   •   Total ascent: 900 mt

Last day, leaving Dorgali we start to climb gradually the SS125 to arrive at the level of 1000 mt of the Genna Silana Pass. This steady climb along the slopes of the Oddoene Valley offers great views on the Flumineddu River and the Gorge of Gorroppu, one of Europe’s deepest gorges with 500 mt deep. After reaching the Genna Silana Pass we descend surrounding by a wild landscape, limestone mountains, flocks of sheep, cows and pigs, and then a forest, until to arrive where you’ll see the view a gulf, with at the bottom our last town, Santa Maria Navarrese.
